Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

A neurological movement disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs accompanied by uncomfortable sensations that often occur in the evening or when at rest.

  • RLS affects approximately 10% of adults in the U.S.
  • Sleep disturbance is the primary reason patients seek medical attention
  • RLS is believed to be associated with a dysfunction way that dopamine is transmitted in the brain
  • RLS may limit one’s ability to sit for extended periods of time

Common Symptoms

  • Strong urge to move the legs

  • Unpleasant sensations in the legs

  • Symptoms worsen at night

  • Relief after moving, stretching, or walking

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep

Sometimes, symptoms can also affect the arms.

Causes

The exact cause is not always known, but RLS may be linked to:

  • Iron deficiency

  • Family history (genetic factor)

  • Pregnancy (especially third trimester)

  • Chronic kidney disease

  • Diabetes

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Certain medications (antidepressants, antihistamines)

Treatment Options

Lifestyle Changes

  • Regular sleep schedule

  • Moderate exercise

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol

  • Leg massage or warm baths

  • Stretching before bedtime

    Medical Treatment

    • Iron supplements (if iron is low)

    • Medications that affect dopamine levels

    • Anti-seizure medications (in some cases)
