Psychological issues such as anxiety and depression are closely related to problems sleeping. Testing may determine what, if any, psychological factors are inhibiting a patient’s sleep-cycle.
Anxiety ~
Anxiety is stress not necessarily tied to any present stressful stimuli. It can be the aftereffect of a stressful stimuli or the result of anticipation thereof. Although some degree of anxiety is normal, excessive anxiety can lead to an anxiety disorder. Anxiety can cause bodily issues such as tension, muscle weakness, shortness of breath, and heart palpations. The physical and mental ramifications of excessive anxiety make achieving restful sleep a struggle.
Depression ~
Generally, depression may be classified as a state of low mood and unwillingness to engage in activities. The symptoms of depression are widespread and diverse, and include persistent sadness, feelings of guilt, issues with concentration, irritability or restlessness, fatigue, or insomnia. Certain types of depression have been linked to failures in the transmission of serotonin in the brain, and may be treated with reuptake inhibitors.
